A guide to Paphos, Cyprus - with Thanos Hotels

Southern Cyprus boasts an illustrious history, renowned for its coastal treasures and ancient archaeological wonders. In recent times, the island's accession to the European Union has breathed new life into its self-assurance, catalysing a transformation akin to the flourishing cosmopolitanism of Greece.

The quaint resort town of Ayia Napa, nestled in the southeast, was the first to introduce Cyprus as a budget-friendly holiday destination back in the late 1970s. However, this image has posed an enduring challenge for the island. In contrast, when Paphos was initially developed for tourism, the authorities exercised prudence in their approach to planning and development. Consequently, Paphos has evolved into a more refined destination in comparison, adorned with palm-lined boulevards, a plethora of culinary establishments, and a treasure trove of archaeological marvels, including the remnants of an ancient city, expansive frescoed tombs, Byzantine monasteries, and glistening golden shores.

Since the 1980s, Thanos Michaelides and his two sisters have been at the helm of the family business, Thanos Hotels, alongside their father. I visited two of their stunning properties last month on a press trip for a late summer getaway; the Grand Dame Anassa, and their chic modern sister Almyra.

Almyra

Almyra stands out as one of the five distinguished hotels within the group, uniquely tailored for both design enthusiasts and families alike. After a comprehensive two-year revitalisation in 2003, this sophisticated 187-room resort has ascended to European stardom, largely attributed to the visionary leadership of Thanos Michaelides.

Recognising a gap in the market for family-oriented boutique resorts, Michaelides embarked on a mission to seamlessly blend high-end design aesthetics with family-friendly amenities. The outcome has been a resounding and pleasantly surprising success. The property boasts four inviting swimming pools, a tennis court, a state-of-the-art spa, and an array of dining options—all harmonized with the fresh and sophisticated designs curated by French designer Joelle Pleot.

For Michaelides, the essence lies in embracing challenges. He believes “It’s about being challenged. I’ve never tried to find the easiest thing to do, but the best thing to do. The next thing, the challenging thing. And that’s what Almyra is about. It’s the only design hotel in Cyprus. We created something here that didn’t exist”.

Almyra boasts a refined interior exuding elegance, drawing inspiration from the island's beloved patron goddess of love and beauty, Aphrodite. Banquette sofas and low tables crafted from iroko and oak wood are strategically positioned to face windows that frame panoramic ocean views, creating a truly breathtaking ambiance. Renowned Parisian designer Joelle Pleot employs a harmonious blend of natural materials, glass, and Carrara marble to instill a soothing atmosphere within the rooms.

Recently undergoing a substantial renovation, Almyra has elevated its enchanting aesthetic by introducing new finishes and bespoke furniture meticulously crafted by local artisans. This commitment to craftsmanship enhances the allure of the property, offering guests an immersive and uniquely tailored experience. The property is also a member of Design Hotels.

Anassa

Anassa stands as the crowning jewel within the Thanos group, a collection of Cypriot family-owned and operated hotels celebrated for their sophisticated allure. Among its notable counterparts are the chic and minimalist Almyra, the recently revitalized Annabelle, and the eagerly anticipated Aloe (poised to open in the near future). Yet reigning supreme is Anassa—grand, elegant, and exuding absolute confidence, commanding a legion of devoted guests who return time and again to bask in its unparalleled charm.

In addition to procuring all ingredients from local sources and drawing all spa water directly from the bay, Anassa has taken significant strides in sustainability. Single-use plastics have been entirely phased out, replaced by the use of large bottles in every bathroom. Moreover, the hotel adopts a conscientious approach to irrigation by nurturing its gardens with grey, reclaimed water. Demonstrating a commitment to eco-friendly practices, Anassa proudly aligns itself with the Cyprus Sustainable Tourism Initiative (CSTI), an independent organization dedicated to linking tour operators with local community producers. The overarching goal is to minimize the carbon footprint of the tourism industry in Cyprus.

The Rooms

The rooms exude timeless sophistication and tranquility, a recent transformation guided by the artistic touch of Parisian interior designer Joelle Pleot, subtly echoing the coastal elegance of the Hamptons. Nautical stripes and pristine cream linens define the space, creating a serene ambiance. As night falls and the windows are thrown open, the only sound that graces your ears is the gentle caress of the sea against the sandy shore.

For those seeking the sunniest late-afternoon retreats and the most breathtaking sunset panoramas, opt for a room perched high in the West Wing. Regardless of your room's orientation, a mesmerizing spectacle awaits, offering a sweeping 180-degree vista. From the turquoise waters of the Akamas National Park on one side to the picturesque marina of nearby Latchi on the other, every view is a captivating tableau.

The Spa

The ambiance at Thalassa spa is a seamless blend of crispness, freshness, and nautical charm. Initially established as a thalassotherapy spa, it remains true to its roots, offering invigorating and restorative experiences like jet sprays and saltwater baths sourced directly from the Mediterranean. Beyond the traditional offerings, the spa boasts an extensive selection of Tata Harper and Augustinus Bader therapies and products. Noteworthy among them is the extraordinary Anastasia Achilleos-method facial—an indulgent, cocooning session where you find solace in the therapist's embrace while reclining on a heated water pad.

Make sure to bask in the splendor of the show-stopping, multi-columned indoor pool, accentuated by a captivating golden sun mural. It's a must-see element that adds to the spa's allure and elevates the overall experience.

And so?

Nestled in the captivating landscape of Cyprus, Anassa is a haven that transcends generational boundaries, ensuring a delightful experience for every stage of life. From the lively activities at the renowned kids' club to the convivial atmosphere around the banquet-style buffet, Anassa welcomes children with open arms. The cast-iron balconies offer a romantic retreat for honeymooners, while the new parents, with a contented gleam in their eyes, navigate the blissful chaos of parenthood. Anassa's timeless charm also resonates with the wise grandmas and grandpas, who find joy in reliving cherished moments.

In essence, Anassa not only captivates with its breathtaking views, luxurious amenities, and exceptional service but also stands as a beacon of sustainability, embracing guests of all ages and ensuring a memorable and responsible retreat on the shores of Cyprus.
